Southeast of Helper is the Highway 6 turnoff for Nine Mile Canyon. Northwest of Helper is the turnoff for Duchense and Roosevelt. South of Helper is Castle Country, and Highway 6 from Helper to Green River is on the Dinosaur Diamond. Highway Six is a great way to go between western Colorado, Salt Lake City and Interstate 80 in Nevada. Whereas the first Transcontinental Railroad skipped the best of the Rockies by going North along the Platte River valley on through Wyoming, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad built a line along the path later taken by Utah State 6. Amtrak's California Zephyr stops sporadically at Helper, Utah, See the United States the Amtrak Way -- behind schedule California's best railroad trip -- San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara on the Coast Starlight Why I Want Big Changes at Amtrak I've had decent stays in nearby Price at the Greenwell Inn and the Holiday Inn. The Super 8 next door looked good, but I didn't try it -- it was booked. When I was there in late 2006 a huge power plant project had temporary contractors in Price in droves. The hotels you might expect to be sleepy were booked out. As long as this project continues, stay in the Helper area but BOOK AHEAD! |
You can stop almost anywhere and get a great view on Utah's Highway Six, the main route between Salt Lake City and Green River, Utah.      |
WARNING: Drive safely on
Highway Six. The locals drive skillfully at dangerously high rates of speed.
The tourists who don't know the road go even faster. There are many deceptively
sharp curves on this road -- BE SAFE and AVOID A SPEEDING TICKET -- do the
speed limit on Utah's Highway Six between Provo and Helper, Price and
Wellington. Then drive 100mph to Green River if you like.      |
